FAQ

SEER - A S.E.E.R. (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) is the rating and performance standards that have been developed by the U.S. government and equipment manufacturer's to produce an energy consumption rating that is easy to understand by consumers. It has a universal formula and conditioning that can be applied to all units and compensates for varying weather conditions.

Basically, the lower the S.E.E.R. rating, the more energy (electricity) is required to produce the desired effect.

MERV - MERV ratings are used to rate the ability of an air conditioning filter to remove dust from the air as it passes through the filter. MERV is a standard used to measure the overall efficiency of a filter. Higher MERV ratings mean fewer dust particles and other airborne contaminants pass through the filter.

AFUE - stands for "Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency" and is expressed as a percentage. It is not an absolute rating of the energy efficiency of a piece of equipment per se, but it is intended to indicate what the overall efficiency would be in a typical application over the course of a year. This is what people really want to know when they purchase heating equipment, so they can get an idea of what it is going to cost to operate compared to what they have now.

R-410A refrigerant was developed as an environmentally friendly and more efficient alternative to replace R-22 (Freon). R-410A refrigerant--also known as Puron--does not deplete the ozone the way R-22 does but does have a higher global warming potential than the R-22 coolant.

R22 is being phased out due to its potential as an ozone depletion and potent greenhouse gas.

It is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HFCF) and has been predominantly used in air conditioning systems.

Production of R22 equipment will cease in 2010, however reclaimed R22 can be used until 2015. Supplies of reclaimed R22 are predicted to decrease due to the high demand, and the price is therefore expected to increase.

If your existing air conditioning system is more than five years old then it will most likely be using R22, changes in EU regulation will affect all companies that currently have plant containing R22 refrigeration. Critical deadlines are approaching and we recommend that you contact us to ensure you have budgets and a programme in place to ensure your business is not adversely affected.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a term referring to the air quality within and around buildings and structures, especially as it relates to the health and comfort of building occupants.

IAQ can be affected by microbial contaminants (mold, bacteria), gases (including carbon monoxide, radon, volatile organic compounds), particulates, or any mass or energy stressor that can induce adverse health conditions. Indoor air is becoming an increasingly more concerning health hazard than outdoor air. Using ventilation to dilute contaminants, filtration, and source control are the primary methods for improving indoor air quality in most buildings.
